my summer home

so a while pack i promised a tour of my little home here in Oakland
and five years later i am finally giving you a little tour.

even though really it isn't my home at all.
the only things that are mine are the clothes in the closet, a few books and some food in the fridge.
so really here is a look at Rachel's home.
it was so weird walking through the door on the first day.
it seriously felt like i was breaking into someone else's home

but now it feels like my home, even for just a few months it is the place that i come home to.
it is funny how home changes.

Rachel has an awesome giant chalk board in the entrance to her apartment.

here is my bed (yep Lola made the trek to norcal with me).
and my little stack of books.
and my basket of knitting stuff.

here is rachel's wall of prints and art.
it is one of my favorite parts of the apartment.
it is a really fun idea to mix and match things and cover the wall in creative pieces
that bring you joy.

and there is a nice big comfy chair. which is definitely a necessity.

there is a lovely sitting area that looks out onto the complex courtyard.
it is so nice to have that much sunlight streaming in.

here is the kitchen.

and the cute little stove
that i have come to hate because the oven is super inconsistent
and it gets way hotter than it needs to.

so i have never been a big fan of mirrors.
they just aren't my thing.
but i absolutely love the mirror that sits over the kitchen sink
mainly because it is perfect for making silly faces at my self.
and sometimes when you are little down about the day there is nothing better
than making yourself laugh out loud.

here is the kitchen table.
Rachel has a massive collection of cookbooks.
this is only half of them shown in the picture above.
one day i hope to aspire to that level of cookbook hoarding.

and here's my closet.
there is actually a shocking amount of storage in this little studio.
there are three decently sized closets.
and my bathtub has pink tiles which i kind of actually love.
it is a great splash of color.

so there you go.

although i will only be living here for two more weeks and then i will be moving next door.
it is all very complicated.
but Mati next door has an even cuter apartment.
so i will make sure to take some pictures and show you her place too
and since it is a corner apartment it has even more light streaming in.
love it!

unfinished song

i went to the movies last weekend at the cutest little theater in Berkeley.
it is called the Elmwood theater and it only shows independent movies
which are some of my favorites.
i think because for the most part independent films are about people and there normal lives
and all of the complexities that come with life.
and because some of my favorite actors tend to be in independent films

here is the theater.
it was the smallest movie theater i have ever been in.
it's just so precious.

i went to see the unfinished song.
which is equal parts precious and heartbreaking.

half the reason i went to see this was because vanessa redgrave is in it.
she is absolutely wonderful.
i have watched Letters to Juliet so many times just because of her.
and Call the Midwife is so much better just because of her voice in the opening and closing credits.
this movie also involved lots of singing (if you didn't catch that in the title)
and who doesn't love singing in movies

the movie was also sad because it was about grandma age people
and it reminded me a lot of my grandparents
and how much more joyful my grandpas life could have been if there
had been a kind soul who had taken an interest in him.
people need people.
even grumpy old men who don't really like people.
they still need kind hearted friends to show them love and affection.
it's just a fact.

breakfast perfection

this past weekend i took an early Sunday morning walk up the street to Berkeley.
and i stopped and had the most perfect breakfast at the Elmwood Cafe.
two poached eggs on top of their own slice of nice sturdy whole wheat toast.
with a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

now i love my fair share of syrup and whip cream waffled and french toast
and even a mcdonalds breakfast sandwich here and there.
but there just isn't anything better than eating delicious wholesome food.
it makes you feel good.
as good food should.

off to the races...

about two weeks ago i went to a regatta. . .
how classy, you say, well why yes it was.
well i mean we sat on the grass and ate cookies.
but that can be classy....right???

anywho..

it was held at Lake Merritt. which is this amazing lake (as you can see in the picture below).
it is right smack dab in the center of Oakland.

the whole reason for attending the regatta was to cheer on tricia's dad.
(tricia has pretty much been my partner in crime here in Oakland)
rowing is like swimming.
it lasts all day and you really can't tell who anyone is anyways
so you just cheer for everyone!

now you see i have always been fascinated by rowing.
mainly because i have always figured it was the only sport i could start now and get good
enough to compete in the olympics.

yep these are the things i think about.

so i have decided one i get settled after graduation i am going to start rowing.
done....just like that...decision made.

now you might say why Anna rowers wake up really early and
well you aren't very good at getting up early.........

and i say.
details.

these are my olympic dreams we are talking about.

i mean business.

getting lost on the embarcadero

a few weeks back i spent my saturday wandering along the embarcadero.
and it was lovely.
i started my morning at the Ferry Plaza farmers market.
it is absolutely wonderful!!! in fact right this minute i am eating a delicious nectarine
i got from there this past weekend.

here is the ferry plaza buidling.
you can't see the market from this view but it goes all along the front and fills up the entire area behind the back of the building.
the inside of the ferry plaza has more permanent shops.
some of them are small local shops selling chocolate or olive oil, then there are a few chain places and a bunch of delicious restaurants.

i had lunch at Gott's Roadside.
it was absolutely delicious.
i ate a salad but i definitely need to go back and get a burger because they looked absolutely delicious.
the best part is that around the corner they have a soft serve and frozen yogurt stand that serves products made from strauss dairy farm. i can't say enough good things about strauss. they are organic and they make the best eggnog in the entire world. i could seriously drink an entire bottle in one sitting.
and there soft serve ice cream was ridiculously good.
definitely the best i have ever had.

this is where the fancy boats stay.

i love being down by the water and seeing all the piers.
being here has made me realize that i have to live by water.
i just can't imagine it any other way.

there was this awesome little cart made out of skateboard decks outside of the exploratorium.

they are currently setting up for the America's Cup race and the Louis Vuitton challenger race.
i am so disappointed that i will already be gone when these races take place.
it would be so amazing to watch and i may never be in the same city as the
race again since it changes every year!

pier 39

alacatraz.
it's just creepy

they have the best bread here.
oh my goodness.
and you can't by a loaf of bread shaped like a turtle.
which is awesome!

the golden gate bridge.
it really isn't golden.
that bothers me.

the beach in the bay.
there was a princess birthday party taking place.
going to the beach in a princess costume sounds pretty cool!

i refrained from getting a giant bowl of ice cream.
i may not be as strong next time.

here is one of the catamarans prepping for the America's Cup.

one of my favorite parts about SF is the old electric train cars.

a chocolate factory???
i didn't go in....yet.
i do feel like it is my responsibility as an American to find out what New American Chocolate is like.
right????

my first few weeks in san fran

According to my iPhone that is.

See the thing is I love my monstrous camera but the problem is well it's monstrous. So the majority of the time I take a lot of pictures with my phone cause you know it's just chillin right there in my backpack and is light as a feather.

So get ready!!! Cause there are a lot of pictures!

Just waiting for the BART.
It is how I spend most of mornings, well except for the weeks that you know I had to work from home oh and then you know the whole BART strike shenanigans.
I really like public transportation.
My only problem it is so hot inside those cars.
I mean sweating!!!!

Took home some light reading from work.
It was so up lifting.
Not!!!
Caring about the world is depressing.

We moved our office the second week I was there.
So the first week it was kind of a disaster.
It is a good thing I am excellent mover and packer.
Thank you 3 1/2 years  in the dorm.
You taught me well.

I bought some new socks!!!
Yep that's right Happy Socks!
I love them!
They are just so much fun!
Plus they are pretty much the only thing I can afford at Madewell.

I was so sad our office moved because it was next to the most amazing grilled cheese sandwich restaurant.
I mean that was what they served...grilled cheese.
It is kind of like a dream come true.

I mean doesn't this bad boy look delicious!
Oh it was!

I made my self some caprese salad.
Good thing I did, cause two days later I killed my basil plant.
They are finicky.
But don't worry I got a new one and he has been going strong for four weeks now.

I attempted to visit the original Levis store.
It was closed.
Or I was confused.
Not sure which.
Sometimes finding things are hard.

Probably the greatest window display I have ever seen at J. Crew.
I mean look at that giant pin cushion.
I was so tempted to try and climb into the window display and just sit right down.

I bought myself some beautiful hydrangeas to keep me company during my week of working at home.

Finally found a Trader Joe's that has cookie butter in stock.
I bought two jars.
You know just in case.
And I forced my friend Tircia to buy one too.

I got myself some new kicks.
Because mint green doesn't go with everything.
Shocking I know.
But off white that goes with everything.

Found an in n out.
So strange that it doesn't have a drive through.

This little guy was parked in the BART parking lot.
And oh my gosh I seriously considered stealing.
It had plaid seats
Need I say more!
Swoon!

By our new office in Oakland there is a donut store that sells mini donuts.
Yes miniature donuts!!!
The best part of this is that you can have more than one,
you don't have to settle.
It is amazing!

And they have juice.
I love Martinelli's Apple Juice.

We work in the penthouse of our building.
That really just means it is the top floor and we do have roof access.

I spent some time sorting buttons last week.
Reminded me of being back at CLU prepping for orientation.

I woke up one morning and turned over and Lola was just standing there staring at me.
Yep it was real creepy.

Don't worry I live in a Nuclear Free Zone.

The line for the bus in downtown Oakland during the BART strike.
I choose to walk to work.
It was three and a half miles each way
but it was way more interesting than a crowded bus.

So excited for July 1.
It meant I could use my new moleskin planner.
Love it!
Makes me feel super grown up and like there are big and important things written in there.
(There aren't)

Spent some more time working at home thanks to the BART strike.
So naturally I wore my moccasins.

Oh and I attended my first Rally.
It was kinda cool.
There were over 1,500 people and we marched across the golden gate bridge in
 protest of the keystone pipeline.
Of course I got sun burned.
